m&m "bakery" cookies...

1 cup brown sugar
1 cup white sugar
1 cup shortening
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
1 cup veg/canola oil
4 cups flour
2 tsp baking soda
4 tsp cream of tartar
1 tsp salt
m&m's

Combine first 5 ingredients and cream about 2 min. Add vegetable oil & mix well. Sift dry ingredients together and add to dough; mixing just until combined. Fold in m&m's. Place on ungreased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 min.

Oh boy, oh boy...I really could leave it at that, but I won't.
I got into my mom's old recipes and found this cookie recipe that was given to her by a dear friend years ago. I was best friends with this dear friends daughter & got to enjoy these cookies on a somewhat regular basis!! They also became a fast favorite in our house.
Because of the cream of tartar & the oil (I NEVER said ANYTHING about these being a "light" cookie...) they really take on the consistency of a bakery cookie. They have a little bit of crispness to them that is sooooo yummy, while still remaining a little chewy. I really don't know how else to describe them...JUST GO BAKE SOME!!
I really think they are better at room temp as opposed to warm. That's just my opinion.
You certainly could use chocolate chips instead of m&m's. My mom would sometimes even use mini chocolate chips.
I also chilled the dough for about 10-15 min before baking & stuck the bowl of dough back in the fridge in between baking times. They turned out better if the dough was a little cold.
I don't care how hot it is. Crank up your oven and bake these little babies.

Oh My Gosh! I remember when your family made those in California 100 years ago! They are the best! I had forgotten all about them.

I've been meaning to ask you, on your "rolled pizza" recipe you mention purchasing the dough from the bakery. I've never done that. Does the bakery from the grocery store sell dough in most stores or do you have a local bakery you go to? I LOVE that idea. I'm just wondering if I have that option in Houston.
Thanks!

Thanks for the tip. If I can't get the fresh dough from the bakery, maybe I'll try using the freezer dough. Wish me luck!

So I've been drooling over your recipes while ignoring my family.
You might have to cook for me one day. I'm dying over the delishious-ness of it all. And then I got to this cookie recipe.

Oh. My. Word.

I don't know how much longer I'll last on this no treat thing.

I just made these cookies and they are delicious!!! Exactly the taste I was hoping for! The only problem is that my cookies are a little on the crumby side...you pics look like your aren't. Any suggestions or thoughts on what I may have done wrong?
Thanks!
